MOJO The Collectors' Series: Nirvana

MOJO The Collectors’ Series: NIRVANA Come As You Are 1987-1994

MOJO’s finest writing on the grunge legends in a single deluxe volume.

Thirty years after Nirvana recorded their last studio album, the brilliant and uncompromising In Utero, the Seattle rock group’s music – and myth – remains as powerful as ever. To salute the ‘Gods of Grunge’, and Kurt Cobain’s uncommon gifts as a frontman, guitarist and songwriter, MOJO has brought together the cream of its writing on the band in a sumptuous 132-page bookazine.

The story begins in late ’80s Seattle, with Nirvana biographer Charles R. Cross recounting the group’s formative years on the local punk scene and the travails of releasing their exhilarating debut album, Bleach, on the independent label Sub Pop. The group’s breakthrough 1991 album Nevermind would, of course, transform Nirvana into an international chart act: while producer Butch Vig reveals the secrets of its recording, Keith Cameron – an early champion of the band in the UK music press – recalls his encounters with Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl during their take-off year, and also interviews key players in the creation of their extraordinary follow-up and swan song, In Utero.

Kurt Cobain’s tragic passing in April 1994 would bring the band’s incendiary career to an abrupt and dramatic halt. While Dave Thompson puts the conspiracy theories surrounding Kurt’s final days under the microscope, writer and cultural historian Jon Savage revisits his lengthy and revelatory interview with Cobain from July 1993. The journey ends with a fascinating early feature on the Foo Fighters – the group which would propel Dave Grohl to post-Nirvana stardom and help keep the group’s incredible legacy alive.

Illustrated with dozens of rare and iconic photographs, this MOJO special edition is a must-have for all Nirvana fans and music connoisseurs.
